NABIC Convention 2016
NABIC hosted its 26th annual convention in Dallas, TX on August 13, 2016. The convention was a great success by the active participation of many local Bangladeshis in Dallas, residents of the state of Texas and many out of state guests.
This year’s convention was enlightened by the theme of “Overcoming Challenges-Applying Islamic Values”. In the opening session Dr. Abu B Ahmed welcomed all the guests and invited the chair of the local Dallas convention committee Mr. Manzur Mahmud to speak on behalf of the convention committee. Mr. Manzur Mahmud Robin thanked NABIC board members for their continuous success in many humanitarian projects and reminded all that Dallas city is enriched with many masjids, Muslim scholars and institutes for the Muslim community in United States. While introducing NABIC, Dr. Rashed Nizam reminded all that NABIC was founded to focus on the needs of the suffering people in Bangladesh and uplift the socioeconomic condition of the ten percent of the Ummah. NABIC has been supporting many humanitarian projects: Islamic Microcredit for poverty alleviation, building and operating hospitals, shelter for orphans and destitute girls, funding science and technology education, providing relief to the victims of natural calamities, supporting the surviving families in tragic incidents and participate in local humanitarian projects in USA.
During the second session, focusing on Bangladesh, Dr. Amin Sarkar, Ex. Vice Chancellor of North South University spoke about the opportunities for Bangladeshi students to pursue higher education. In a separate session focused on youth Dr. Shakil Ahmed addressed some important factors to succeed in corporate jobs. Dr. Muhammad Zaman shared his childhood stories and encouraged to dream big and strive to achieve high goals. This event was moderated by Mr. Lutfi Karim, Treasurer of NABIC. The other panel speakers include Dr. Ataul Karim and Dr. Amin Sarkar. All the presenters narrated their views to have successful career. At a separate room a parallel session was hosted on family affairs presented by Sh Arsalan Haque, Imam of Islamic association of Allen.
This year the evening session of the convention program was enlightened by the presence of the guest speaker Dr. Mohammad Ataul Karim, followed by fundraising banquet, with the help of Br. Azhar Aziz, President of ISNA. Br. Azhar Aziz narrated few remarkable stories from the companions and scholars during Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and highlighted the importance of being charitable and compassionate for the community. He remarked that the NABIC board members are some of the most influential Muslim leaders in United States who are constantly striving for the betterment of many people’s lives other than Bangladeshis. Br. Azhar Aziz passionately reminded all about individual obligations for the sponsored projects of NABIC and appealed for donation. The dinner program raised $225K.
During the banquet dinner, Dr. Mohammad Ataul Karim expressed his optimism for the people of Bangladesh by showing pictures of few ordinary Bangladeshis whose lifestyle had inspired everyone in the audience. Like the lack of bridge or lack of roof for class room did not prevent poor village kids from learning or the ordinary farmers building their own way to fertilize their crops or a bicycle driver turning his cycle to carry multiple people to give ride – all these innovative ideas give hope for e better future in Bangladesh. The winners of the Qirat and Essay competition were received their prizes during the banquet session.
The 2016 NABIC convention was held in Hyatt Regency North Dallas, TX. Thanks to the local convention committee, who worked tirelessly for months to make the convention a success. May Allah SWT reward them for their time and effort to make this event successful.
